About Carolyn Derstine

Carolyn Derstine Nature has always played a significant role in my life. On walks with my dad when I was a child, I was taught to notice the world around me and appreciate the wonder of nature and all of God's creation. To this day, being out in nature is balm for my soul and necessary for my well-being. When I took up photography, I suddenly had a way to express my joy in nature by preserving the wonder I see, and then being able to share it with others.

While I initially did nature and especially macro (close-up) photography, my interests have expanded into photography from travels, scenes of local interest, historic buildings, and basically any interesting image I happen to come across!

Since I have taken up photography, my enjoyment of the world around me is heightened and I am always noticing potential pictures no matter where I am. The whole photography process is intensively and creatively fulfilling for me, from the search for pictures to the final, ready-for-print, edit of an image. I do like to experiment with various editing processes, but mostly I try to stay true to the feel of the original scene as it came across to me. I am also greatly enriched by what I learn from researching the story behind my photographed subjects and places.

I have had several pictures published in Outdoor Photographer Magazine and National Wildlife Magazine, and have won numerous contests. I also was a moderator on the Nature Photographers Network for several years. But for me, my greatest reward, hope, and goal is that through my pictures, I can impart to the viewer some of the wonder and beauty of this amazing world we live in. . .if we just stop to notice. :)
