Description
The ancient city of Orvieto rises above the surrounding Umbrian countryside situated on the flat summit of a large butte of volcanic tuff. Far below lies vineyards and fields dotted with ancient villas. Orvieto has been inhabited since Etruscan times. The Etruscan civilization existed from before 700 BC until it was totally assimilated into the Roman empire by around 100 BC. Near Orvieto is the little ancient village of Rocca Ripesena from which this picture was taken. This town that has few inhabitants is like a “small Orvieto” as it has the same origins and the same geological features with a massive presence of tuffaceous volcanic rocks.
