Description
This 1889 building is an iconic part of the view at Cape May Point. It first started as a hotel but after many transitions, it was purchased in 1909 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph from Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, as a summer retreat house. It continues to this day to provide opportunities for annual retreat for the members of the Congregation and others who desire a similar retreat experience. The nuns will tell you it's miraculous that their 116 year old St. Mary-by-the-Sea retreat still survives the wrath of the aggressive Atlantic Ocean. The storm-tossed high dunes are at their back door, at the very tip of New Jersey.
