Description
Battery Point Lighthouse is a picturesque and historic lighthouse that sits atop an island (at high tide) just off shore in downtown Crescent City, California, just south of the Oregon border. It can only be accessed at low tide when it is possible to walk across the beach and rocks to the island. In operation since 1856, the Battery Point Lighthouse (formerly the Crescent City Light Station) was the first of its kind on the West Coast. Originally lit with oil lamps and tended by a resident keeper, today the lighthouse is completely automated and features an electric Fresnel Lens with 20,000 candle power. Modern day caretakers continue to live on-site, offering guided tours and working on the lighthouse grounds. In this picture, a caretaker can be see standing outside the tower, cleaning the windows.
The Del Norte County Historical Society now maintains the lighthouse and offers guided public tours.
