Description
California Flannelbush, (Fremontodendron californicum), is one of the most spectacular of the native California shrubs. It is a fast growing evergreen shrub with fuzzy, flannel-like leaves and abundant, large yellow blossoms that bloom in the spring. Under ideal conditions, it can reach 20 feet tall and 20 feet wide in five years. The flower is interesting in that it has no petals: the five showy yellow petal-like parts are actually sepals. This is a close-up view of a blossom on a California Flannelbush that was in full bloom outside the Ford House Visitors Center in Mendocino, California.
