Description
Voted one of the Top 3 theatre companies in NJ, Cape May Stage, provides high-quality, professional Equity theatre May-Dec in historic Cape May, NJ since 1988. The building it is currently in was originally built as a church in 1853 and has served various denominations over the years. Almost torn down in the 1950s, preservationists intervened and it became a community center and later a visitors center. In 1993, the theater company began renting this space for their productions. In 2004, a campaign was started to turn this space into a "real" professional theater space. The campaign provided funding to restore the historic church as "the architectural jewel in the city's crown" and inside the building arose a state-of-the-art theatre space. The project was completed in 2008. The former church now has a new life, as the vibrant Robert Shackleton Playhouse, home of Cape May Stage.
