Description
Mission Santa Barbara, also known as Santa Barbara Mission, is a Spanish mission founded by the Franciscan order in 1786 and is located near present-day Santa Barbara, California. Mission Santa Barbara today continues to serve the community as a parish church. In addition to its use as a place of worship, it contains a gift shop, a museum, a Franciscan Friary, and a retreat house. The Mission grounds are a primary tourist attraction in Santa Barbara and the location for Santa Barbara’s annual 3-day I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival in the spring. The Festival has been transforming the Old Mission plaza since 1987, featuring large-scale and vibrantly colorful street paintings created by artists using delicate chalk pastels on pavement. The proceeds from the Festival benefit the Children's Creative Project, a nonprofit arts education program of the Santa Barbara County Education Office.
