Description
The town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was founded in 1741 by Moravians who came to this country as missionaries. They were an intentional community that came originally from Moravia, then went to Bohemia, and then to Pennsylvania. In addition to their faith, music and education were core principles in their community. They created Moravian College in 1742, which still exists today as a private liberal arts college. Much of the historic district has been preserved and/or restored and is open to visitors. The College is located in the historic district and still utilizes many of the original buildings, such as this Brethren House, for their classes. The plaque reads "Honor, O young men of this house, Father and Mother and heavenly spouse." All men, including married men, lived separately from the women in this house; and the women lived in a separate building. Today, historic Bethlehem is a great place to visit at Christmas time as they have many special holiday events, including a Christmas market.
