This is a view of the back portion of the Polyphemus moth which is a North American member of the giant silk moth family (Saturnidae). It is a tan-colored moth, with an average wingspan of 6 in. The most notable feature of the moth is the large eyespots on its two hind wings. The eyespots give it its name - from the Greek myth of the Cyclops Polyphemus. As a defense mechanism, it makes use of its large eye spots on the rear wings to ward off predators by misleading them. Interestingly, the pattern on the hind wings resembles that on the head of the great horned owl.
Nature has always played a significant role in my life. On walks with my dad when I was a child, I was taught to notice the world around me and appreciate the wonder of nature and all of God's creation. To this day, being out in nature is balm for my soul and necessary for my well-being.
