Description
In the 1880's, Mormons established the small settlement of Fruita at the junction of the Fremont River and Sulphur Creek in an area that is now part of Capitol Reef National Park. Even though the population never exceeded ten families, they attempted to live a self-reliant agricultural lifestyle in this isolated landscape and did so for decades. This one-room schoolhouse, constructed by residents in 1896, also served as a community center. However, population gradually declined and in 1941 the school was discontinued for lack of students. After the establishment of Capitol Reef National Monument in 1937, private land was gradually purchased by the National Park Service, nearing completion in the 1960s. Some of the buildings and orchards from this time are maintained by the Park service as reminders of these pioneer times in a historic district within Capitol Reef National Park.
