Description
The Colosseum, an oval amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome, Italy, is built of travertine, tuff, and brick-faced concrete. It was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. It was thought to be able to hold around 50,000 spectators who were seated in a tiered arrangement that reflected the rigidly stratified nature of Roman society. The center of the arena consisted of a wooden floor (covered with sand) which covered over an elaborate two-level subterranean network of tunnels and cages beneath the arena where gladiators and animals were held before contests began. After four centuries of active use, the magnificent arena fell into neglect, and up until the 18th century it was used as a source of building materials. Though two-thirds of the original Colosseum has been destroyed over time, the amphitheater remains a popular tourist destination, as well as an iconic symbol of Rome and its long, tumultuous history.
