Description
Saint Peter's Basilica, located in the Vatican City of Rome, Italy, is regarded as the center of Christianity and one of the holiest Catholic shrines, drawing pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. It is also regarded as the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and one of the largest churches in the world. The imposing structure was built over a span of more than one hundred years by the greatest Italian architects of the era. The opulence of the interior bears testimony to the wealth of the Catholic church in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The entire interior of St. Peter's is lavishly decorated with marble, reliefs, architectural sculpture and gilding. This view is looking up above the main altar towards the majestic dome. Colorful mosaics of the evangelists decorate the tops of the main pillars supporting the dome.
