Description
The Cathedral in Siena, Italy is filled with amazing works of art wherever one turns and the library in the cathedral is certainly no exception. The Piccolomini Library was built in 1492 by Pope Pius III in memory of his uncle, Pope Pius II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini), as a repository of the books and the manuscript collection of his uncle. Frescoes on walls and ceiling were painted by the Umbrian Bernardino di Betto, called Pinturicchio, and his assistants. The intricate ceiling is covered with painted panels of mythological subjects with the family coat of arms at the center of the ceiling. The visual impact of being surrounded by these very colorful frescoes is stunning!
