Description
Views near the upper level entrance of the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, look out over the lower courtyard and into the Umbrian countryside. Umbria, called the "green heart of Italy", is the country's geographical center and only landlocked region. The lower courtyard is lined with arcades that date back to 1474 and were built to help with the disordered influx of merchants by creating structures for commercial activities and to provide a semi-protected space where pilgrims could gather. The square therefore had an essentially social function, for the reception of the crowds before and after the entrance to the basilica.
