Description
The sun filtering through the trees highlighted this little insect, which I believe is a Mayfly, resting on some oat grass seedheads. Mayflies are aquatic insects spending very little time out of the water, only to mate, rest and deposit their eggs. They are very delicate insects known for their extremely short life spans and emergence in large numbers in the summer months. Mayflies are some of the most ancient insects around; they are well represented in Carboniferous fossils dating >300 million years ago. Fossil mayflies look remarkably like our modern mayflies; some consider them "living fossils." The oldest fossil of a winged insect is a mayfly.
