Description
McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park sits on the eastern edge of the Cascade
Range, between majestic Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak, in northern California. The park’s centerpiece is the thundering 129-foot white-water falls on Burney Creek. 100 million gallons of water pour over the 129-foot cliff every day, joining spring-fed streams pouring out of openings in the basalt cliff face. While not the highest or largest waterfall in the state, they are quite possibly the most beautiful. Teddy Roosevelt once described Burney Falls as the “eighth wonder of the world”. Burney Falls was named after pioneer settler Samuel Burney who lived in the area in the 1850s. The McArthurs were pioneer settlers who arrived in the late 1800s. Descendants were responsible for saving the waterfall and nearby land from development. They bought the property and gave it to the state as a gift in the 1920s.
