Description
Piazza del Campo, or El Campo as it is commonly known, is the principal public space of the historic center of Siena, Tuscany, Italy and is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares. It is renowned worldwide for its beauty and architectural integrity. The City Hall and its Tower (both not visible in this image), as well as various palazzi signorili (noblemen residences) surround the shell-shaped piazza. At the northwest edge is the fountain, Fonte Gaia. As in the past, it remains a popular gathering spot in Siena, where visitors and locals lounge about the square and frequent its restaurants and shops. The twice-a-year horse-race, Palio di Siena, is held around the edges of the piazza and it is also the finish of the annual road cycling race Strade Bianche. A passageway from the square leads up steps to the Piazza del Duomo where the famous Cathedral of Siena and its tower are located. The top of the cathedral and tower can be seen above the rooftops on the left side of this photo.
