Description
The common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual native to North America that is known for its beauty as well as for its seeds and oils. A well-known sunflower characteristic is that the flowering heads track the sun's movement, a phenomenon known as heliotropism. Views from the back can make this especially visible as the stem bends the sunflower daily to orient itself to the sun. In addition, the curling of the bracts and leaves as they envelop the flower petals and seed head, as seen from the back, can be quite interesting to view. I even liked how the curl of the foreground leaf or bract was accentuated by being partially eaten by an insect.
