Description
In early spring, a tiny lily only six to ten inches tall begins popping up throughout the moist forests of Eastern Canada and North America. . .and in my wooded backyard! This beautiful member of the Lily Family has many common names, including Trout Lily, and Dog-tooth Violet. The mature plant has two mottled basal leaves (which resemble Trout skin, thus, its common name), and a small yellow lily nodding from the top of a leafless stem. The lily opens each morning and closes each night, but during the middle of a bright day the petals open so far that they are all curved backwards. These lovely flowers only bloom in early spring and then disappear. This particular Trout Lily was growing up through a bed of common Periwinkle groundcover in one of my shaded garden beds. The leaves were hidden by the groundcover. The purple flowers of the Periwinkle were also blooming which added some spots of contrasting color in the background.
