Description
This view from St. Mark's Basilica looks between the Doge's Palace and the Column of San Marco out over St. Mark's Basin to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, Italy. The bronze winged-lion sculpture atop the granite column, called "The Lion of Venice" has come to symbolize the city. Doge's Palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Venetian Republic and opened as a museum in 1923. The island of San Giorgio Maggiore, or more specifically its Palladian church, is an important landmark that has been frequently painted by artists over the centuries. One of the many amazing views in the ancient city of Venice!
