Description
Across the Eastern Seaboard of Delaware and southern New Jersey, 11 cylindrical concrete towers rise above the coastal plains and marshes and overlook the Atlantic. The towers were built between 1939 and 1942 by the United States Army to be used as watch towers during World War II, They were used to look for enemy ships and, if any had been spotted, the crews within the towers would have alerted the Army at Fort Miles to defend the shoreline. Several of these towers, along with historic Fort Miles are located within Cape Henlopen State Park near Lewes, Delaware.
