Description
Yaquina Head Lighthouse is a 93 foot tower located on a narrow point of land jutting due west nearly 1 mile into the Pacific Ocean north of Newport, Oregon at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. It is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. Winds and rain have buffeted this lighthouse since its beginning in 1872, when it took approximately one year, and over 370,000 bricks to construct. The lighthouse still uses its original 1868 French-made, 1st order, Fixed Fresnel lens, visible 19 miles (31 km) out to sea. In 1993, the lighthouse was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Wildflowers surround the natural areas around the lighthouse.
