Deptford Pink is a small, but brightly colored wildflower. It was given its name due to the fact that it was supposed to have grown in abundance during Tudor times in the fields near Deptford UK, now an industrial section of London. This wildflower has been rapidly decreasing in Britain, now classified as vulnerable and protected in its natural habitat; however, it thrives throughout the rest of Europe and North America. Although it is closely related to Dianthus (Pinks) that are commonly cultivated in flower gardens, the flowers are smaller in size and less showy. It usually grows in open sites such as in pastures and along roadsides; I found these growing in a meadow close to my house.
Nature has always played a significant role in my life. On walks with my dad when I was a child, I was taught to notice the world around me and appreciate the wonder of nature and all of God's creation. To this day, being out in nature is balm for my soul and necessary for my well-being. When I took up photography, I suddenly had a way to express my joy in nature by preserving the wonder I see, and then being able to share it with others.
