The native dwarf crested iris (iris cristata), can be found in dense stands and floodplains of Maryland to Oklahoma and down to Georgia. However, a cultivar called "Powder Blue Giant" has been developed from this plant that is taller and more vigorous than the native variety. This cultivar grows well in my Pennsylvania shade beds; the blue flowers add a welcome touch of color when they bloom in early spring.

Nature has always played a significant role in my life. On walks with my dad when I was a child, I was taught to notice the world around me and appreciate the wonder of nature and all of God's creation. To this day, being out in nature is balm for my soul and necessary for my well-being.
