Description
The building of Florence Cathedral started in 1296 and was completed in 1469. But the façade was still unfinished and would remain so until the 19th century. An earlier facade had been half completed but then was later dismantled. Finally work began in 1876 on a new facade and was completed in 1887. This neo-gothic façade forms a harmonious entity with the cathedral, Giotto's bell tower and the Baptistery, but some think it is excessively decorated. This is a detailed look of the mosaic and facade above the main door. The mosaic shows Christ on throne, with Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, and several local saints, among them Saint Reparata and Saint Zenobius, patron saints of the city, which is symbolized by the lilies in foreground.
