Artist's Description

.Carolina horsenettle (Solanum carolinense) is not a true nettle but a member of the nightshade family. The leaves and stems are often covered with fine hairs and prickly spines. The flowers, which appear at the top of the plant from June through August, are three-quarters to one inch across and range from light purple, blue to white. It is a perennial herbaceous plant, native to the southeastern United States that has spread widely throughout much of temperate North America. (This was taken in western Pennsylvania.) Banded Longhorn Beetles have extremely long antennae (horns) and are often found on flowers, eating the pollen of a variety of species. They are wider at the 'shoulders' and taper at the tip of the abdomen.
