Artist's Description
Buonconsiglio Castle is the historical heart of the city of Trento, Italy. Dating back to 1239, much of the history of Trento has taken place here. During the Napoleonic wars, the principality of Trento was suppressed and occupied by the Bavarians, French or Austrians over the years, and the castle slowly declined. During World War I, Buonconsiglio Castle was being used as a military barracks by the Austrians when three Trento patriots, who were advocating for Trento to be returned to Italy, were tried and imprisoned in the castle. They were eventually executed in this courtyard beside the castle in 1916. These martyrs are greatly revered in Italy for it is felt that through their actions and testimony, Trento was eventually returned to Italy in 1920. At that point, the castle became a national museum and was restored; since 1992, it is home to the Provincial Gallery of Art. Today, this courtyard functions as a monument honoring these Italian patriots.

While I initially did nature and especially macro (close-up) photography, my interests have expanded into photography from travels, scenes of local interest, historic buildings, and basically any interesting image I happen to come across! Since I have taken up photography, my enjoyment of the...
