Mayapples (Podophyllum peltatum) are native plants in the eastern United States and Canada that colonize by rhizomes, forming dense mats in damp meadows, woodlands, and roadside ditches. They are one of the first plants to emerge in early spring. Though the common name is Mayapple, it is the flower that appears in early May, not the "apple". Each flower gives way to an edible, fleshy, greenish fruit (Mayapple) that can be used to make jellies or preserves. However, the rest of the plant is posionous. The flower is quite showy but is usually hidden by the umbrella-like leaves, and it also points downward. I found this clump of flowering Mayapple plants growing in a mountain meadow. In order to photograph this pretty flower, I laid down on the ground to take an upward shot.
