Artist's Description
Mission Santa Barbara, also known as Santa Barbara Mission, is a Spanish mission founded by the Franciscan order in 1786 near present-day Santa Barbara, California. Known as the “Queen of the Missions” for its exceptional beauty, it is a chief cultural and historic landmark in the city of Santa Barbara. In addition to being a primary tourist attraction, the Mission still functions as an active parish church and is the only mission continuously operated by the Franciscans since its founding. Following the devastation of several original adobe structures by earthquakes, the church at Mission Santa Bárbara was rebuilt of stone between 1812 and 1820, and restored again after the earthquake of 1925.
