Artist's Description

Sheet Harbour is a small rural community located on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. The Sheet Harbour Visitor Information Center, located in the historic MacPhee House, is situated on the site of a former ground-wood pulp mill. This giant sculpture on the visitor center grounds, was done by Arthur Turner, a local carver, to commemorate the area's logging industry. It depicts scaler, Mike McInnis, who measured the wood brought in by truckers for Scott's Pulp Mill. Logging has been vital to the area since its settlement more than 225 years ago. Arthur Turner, the carver, descends from 6 generations of log drivers who moved logs from a forest to sawmills and pulp mills downstream using the current of a river.
