Description
Black Opal Pool in Biscuit Basin, is one of many beautiful pools in Yellowstone that are colored by mats of thermophiles, extreme microorganisms that can survive in the hot water running off from the springs. This pool occupies an explosion crater formed in 1934 and is is now a beautiful opalescent blue. Smoke from forest fires in Yellowstone can be seen just above the tree line.
