Description
Dripping Springs Trail is located inside Dripping Springs Natural Area, now part of Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, just outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Hiking along this quiet and scenic 3 mile out-and-back trail is a great way to learn about some interesting history and view amazing scenery. Nestled deep in the Organ Mountains near the top of the trail, an isolated but somewhat luxurious mountain camp resort was built by a Confederate officer, Colonel Eugene Van Patten, in the later 1800s close to a dripping springs. A 17-mile stage line from Las Cruces transported guests to the facility. The current trail follows along this old stagecoach route. The resort attracted notable and notorious guests, including the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, Billy the Kid and the man who would later kill Billy, lawman Pat Garrett. The resort was later purchased by Dr. Nathan Boyd in 1917 to establish a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. This building is what is left of the dining hall for the sanatorium and, previously, the resort.
