Description
Canyon de Chelly National Monument in northeastern Arizona, covers nearly 84,000 acres and preserves ruins of various indigenous tribes that lived in the area for nearly 5,000 years, from the Ancestral Puebloans (also known as the Anasazi) to the Navajo. It is one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America; currently about 40 Navajo families still inhabit the canyon floor, farming and herding sheep during the summer months. Canyon de Chelly is entirely owned by the Navajo Tribal Trust of the Navajo Nation. It is the only National Park Service unit that is owned and cooperatively managed in this manner. Two paved rim drives provide access to various overlooks for scenic views over the canyon and some of the ancient ruins. This view from the Antelope House Overlook looks down into the valley with views of the Antelope House ruins visible in the shade of the large cliff face.
