Description
Dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum) is a weedy perennial that is native to North America. Even though it is an important pollinator and has had uses as a medicinal plant, the sap contains a toxic substance that can be poisonous to dogs (Apocynum means "away dog") and other livestock, making it also a nuisance weed in some areas. Another common name for this plant is Indian Hemp, because native Amerindians obtained strong silky fibers from the stems. These fibers were used as twine in basketry, mats, netting, rope, and other artifacts. Flowers are followed by long (4") narrow pods that release numerous small seeds tipped by a tuft of cottony hairs that aid in wind dispersal. The plants are often mistaken for Milkweed.
