Description
Monhegan Island,10 miles offshore from mid-coast Maine, is a picturesque summer haven for artists and vacationers but is also a working lobster fishing village. Monhegan, which is about 1.7 miles long and 0.7 miles wide, offers an exceptionally beautiful environment, two thirds of which is protected as a nature preserve. There are a couple of inns and guesthouses, a couple of shops and the weathered shingled homes of less than 100 year-round residents. What passes for roads are narrow, gravel ways that are used by a dozen or so battered trucks to haul lobster pots, transport supplies for the island, and to transport the luggage of island guests to their lodging. No cars are allowed on the island. The dock is a hub for island activity as ferry boats bring visitors, the mailboat makes a daily stop, island supplies are delivered, and lobstermen unload their catch.
