Description
An owl butterfly is a butterfly, in the genus Caligo, known for their huge eyespots, which resemble owls' eyes. They are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central, and South America. One of the largest butterflies in Central America, the caligo often sits with its wings closed, showing only the brown and gray undersides decorated with large, yellow-ringed eye spots. This butterfly was sitting on the leaves of a banana tree in a butterfly garden in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica.
