Description
A stilt house in a southern rural Vietnam village includes the tombs of ancestors in the front yard. Although burial in cemeteries is encouraged, many farmers in the South continue to bury their dead in their fields or front yards. A deep reverence for elders has always been a spiritual cornerstone of Vietnamese culture. When a Vietnamese person passes away, it is believed that one’s life does not end but that the afterlife begins and the family continues to provide special offerings and pray tribute at ancestral altars. If a tomb is not readily accessible, a family altar is located somewhere within the home. This sturdy stilt house has a concrete ramp and pillars with a colorful front porch. Under the house is a shady space for storing scooters and other supplies as well as cages for chickens.
