Description
Charles Fort was constructed between 1677 and 1682, during the reign of King Charles II, to protect the town and harbor of Kinsale in County Cork, Ireland. As one of the largest military forts in the country, Charles Fort has been associated with some of the most momentous events in Irish history. It fell out of use for many years and went largely to ruin, before being named a National Monument of Ireland. The Irish Heritage Service and the Office of Public Works have since restored large sections of the fort. Visitors can wander around this historic fort to step back in time and imagine the history that has taken place among these walls and grounds.
