Description
Florence's massive cathedral is the city's geographical and spiritual heart, The church was begun in 1296, in the Gothic style, but after generations of work, it remained unfinished. The facade was little more than bare brick, and it stood that way until it was completed in 1870 in the "Neo"-Gothic style. Its "retro" look captures the feel of the original medieval facade, with green, white, and pink marble sheets that cover the brick construction. The facade is decorated with pointed arches, mosaics, and statues. Some people adore the over-the-top look of the facade, while others not so much. Next to the Duomo stands the Campanile or Giotto's Tower. The 270-foot bell tower was begun in the 1300s by the great painter Giotto who excelled in many artistic fields, He designed what many call the most beautiful bell tower in all of Europe.
