Description
Santuario de ChimayĆ³ is a Roman Catholic church located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Chimayo, New Mexico. Built in 1813, it is one of the most beautiful examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in New Mexico and is a National Historic Landmark. For generations, visitors have been coming to the church seeking healing and offering prayers of petition and thanksgiving. Following a long tradition of miraculous shrines, Santuario de Chimayo, also known as the "Lourdes of America", is now one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in the United States, attracting over 300,000 pilgrims from all over the Southwest and elsewhere each year during Holy Week.
